Seventeen Bodies Found as Investigation Continues into Air France Plane Crash – On Monday, a US Navy team was headed to Brazil with high-tech underwater listening devices to help search for the black boxes from the Air France Airbus A330 that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on May 31, 2009, with 228 people on board, from Brazil to Paris. Also, the US is flying a Navy team to Brazil, along with two US Navy devices that can detect emergency beacons up to a depth of 20,000 feet. They will listen for transmissions from the black boxes which are programmed to send off signals for up to 30 days.

To date, Brazilian and French military ships have recovered 17 bodies as well as quite a bit of plane wreckage from the area where the plane sent messages signaling electrical failures and loss of cabin pressure. Nine bodies: four men and four women and one that they were unable to identify, were recovered by Brazilian authorities. No information was available about the genders of the eight bodies recovered by French military helicopters and transferred to a French ship. They would also no comment on the condition of the bodies, saying that the information would be too emotionally painful for relatives.

Air France Investigation Continues

The Brazilian officials are focusing on the recovery of victims from Air France Flight 447, while France is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash which apparently broke apart in midair turbulent weather. The search is focusing on an area about 400 miles northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands, off Brazil’s northern coast.

The Pentagon has stated that there are no signs that terrorism was involved in the crash; however, French officials have not ruled out the possibility even though they have also indicated that there are no signs of terrorism
