Autopsies on Bodies Recovered from Air France Flight 447 Indicate Break-up in Mid-Air – Medical examiners in Paris said on Wednesday that the state of the bodies recovered from the Atlantic Ocean, indicated that the plane broke apart in mid-air. This impression is a result of autopsies which revealed multiple fractures on victims’ legs, hips and arms. They believe that injuries would have been worse if the plane had slammed into the ocean intact. Another sign of the break-up in midair was the fact that there was no water in victims’ lungs, suggesting that they died prior to hitting the water. Validating this theory also is the fact that bodies were found more than 50 miles apart.

There have been only 50 of the 228 people on board the flight recovered. However, there were no burns on the bodies, leading investigators to believe that there was no explosion on the Airbus A330 which went down on May 31, 2009, en route to Paris from Buenos Aires. Also, some recovered bodies had little or no clothing on, which would possibly indicate that the clothing was ripped away in the fall from a distance of 34,500 feet. According to Jack Casey, an aviation safety consultant and former accident investigator in Washington, “Getting ejected into that kind of windsteam is like hitting a brick wall – even if they stay in their seats, it is a crushing effect.”
