Where is the telephone connection on the ACER 5515? I don’t have wireless in my area. How can I connect using dail-up?

The telephone connection is the ethernet port located on the left side of the machine right next to the USB port. :-)

    To Nickiell:

You need to get a Ethernet Jack. It can be purchased at any electronic store. It’s also fairly cheap. It looks like an Ethernet DSL Cable, that hooks up into the Ethernet Jack, than on the other end of it, it has a smaller jack, for instance, a telephone wire. That way, you can hook it up through Dial-Up.

Wow this laptop runs hot fast!!! Hope it will support the webcam I’m planning to get for it.
I wonder if I can change the hdd to a larger one. I get this feeling it consumes a lot of energy.

I bought this because of the price and figured it couldn’t be that bad, but I find it runs very slow…I can’t stream videos, it can barely keep up with how fast I type most of the time…I am thinking of returning it

    To Lindsay:

I’m not sure why yours is running slow but I bought mine the day it went on sale and it works great. When I got it I cleaned off all the junk that was on it (ie McAfee, Oberon Media games, etc) and I have no problems at all. It runs Office 2007 like a dream. I even got some graphically demanding games like Counter-Strike Source to run on it. Try uninstalling all the irrelevant junkware on it and it might run better. If its still running slow the definitely return it. No one wants a brand new slow computer. Good luck with the laptop.

Ok, I bought this laptop after buying and returning the mini laptop from Acer. On the mini aspire I was able to get a wireless connection as soon as I tried , but the 5515 , Im not getting anything. I even used my broadband at home, called Acer and we returned the computer to its factory condition and stilll NOTHING!!! im not so happy as you can tell. Anyone have the same trouble? Any ideas? I live in a huge city and I know there should be wireless connections somewhere.

Stupid question, but did you try the wireless switch on the front next to the battery light? Also what OS are you using? I just bought this laptop a couple of days ago and the very first thing I did was to eliminate All traces of Microsoft from the system. I am an avid linux fan and I installed Ubuntu 8.10 and the system runs great. There were a few wireless driver issues at first but Google was my friend and after an hour I had wifi up and running.

  • Marsha
    1 February, 2009, 23:59

Yes I tried the wireless switch on the front lol. If your talking about the operatng sysytem t says 32 bit. Im not a computer tech so I have no clue as to what Im doing on a laptop. lol. I did take the compter to a friend of mine and he had it up and running at his house in no time, found wireless connections and even used his broadband on it. Said I shouldnt have any trouble getting connected, but here I am once again typing this drom my desktop.

    Marsha,

on the toolbar there should be a symbol that looks like two computer monitors. Run your mouse pointer to it and then select connect to a network. The Acer should to the rest for you. If it’s a secured wireless network you’ll need the password to connect. Other than that there shouldn’t be a problem connecting.

Hello, I must admit i was sceptical when i first saw the adverstisement. Then when i did a further review at the store itself i was blown away.
I purchased three for my children and the purchased another one later that day. Mine is really fast after i took off some of the stuff i did not need. Like alot of the game’s. Anyway’s it has built in wirelesss internet on the front, 2 usb port’s.(usb 2.0) built in dvd,cd, burner. Really nice. Hope all that bought one will like. The only thing is, it was advertised with a cam but it does NOT have one built in. Thank you for reading.

I have one MAJOR problem with this laptop…. But I think it is a factory mistake… My CD/DVD drive… One one side of it it is to high so it is hitting the top of the drive, and makes and awful sound. But I am thinking that I could fix it myself and it should be fine for the price I payed for it. It is an awesome machine. I love it and it is great for the job that I do so that is all I am glad for,

  • 9 February, 2009, 10:22

This laptop is a great machine, perfect for business use, however I do agree with the no camera either that or it’s hidden and the software isn’t installed or something, besides

Referring to Tink Mine does the same thing with the dvd drive it’s catching on the plastic molding i took a small file to it not even noticable and fixed the problem

I just got mine and LOVE it! I have never had any problems with it connecting to the net or with it being slow? I think it is great for my needs. My husband has a larger Acer and has had it for awhile and no problems there either! Great price I looked at one with less features at Best Buy and they wanted 449 for it on sale!!

Quick question: The only instruction book I got in the box was the “Quick Guide” which is just a description of the laptop (front, back, left, right) and that’s about it…
Now, the “Wireless LAN communication button/indicator” = they say “enables/disables the wireless LAN function”…QUESTION: this button has to positions ENABLE and DISABLE???…cause on my laptop, if you move it to the left it has a some kind of spring and comes right back on the right position.

Bought one for my mom was was REALLY pleased – very stable and I too removed all games. MS Office and Norton amongst a few others – also turn off things from running in msconfig/startup. You shoudl do this with ALL new computers to speed it up and free disk space. Installed Verizon VZAccess Manager and my wireless card works great, wi-fi also shows up in the list. It runs very cool. BUT I bought one for myself and this one is running hotter – can youtell me if after it’s been on a couple of hours if you feel some heat coming through the keyboard, over the vented area if the computer is sitting flat on a surface (in my case the cardboard box it came in?)

Gabriela, I was wondering that myself and thought for sure mine was messed up. It’s not and just works that way.
Right click on the Battery icon on the Taskbar and then on Windows Mobility Center. You’ll see the wireless connection In the right top corner of the screen that opens up. Watch It and use the Wireless button In the front and you’ll see It tongle the Wireless off and on. That should signify that It works and one way of turning on/off your Wireless.
    Hope that hellps! :-)

It’s a great laptop for the price. but there is one small problem. go to Acer’s website and type in this model number for accesories, ect. It’s not listed in any drop down menu on the site. And you can’t email Acer with a question or comment, you have to call, no email under “contact us,” just a phone number.

I got the computer earlier this week so I have not looked too much into what is already on it. It has vista which is kinda annoying to work with. I love the wider screen (wider than the old computer I was using before), computer is pretty quiet, feels smooth. I am having trouble finding a wireless network that isn’t “security enabled”, but with my old computer and wireless card I had for it I could connect to a local wireless internet.
This computer does have a cd/dvd player and burner in one which I will enjoy using once I check it out first. Vista takes up a lot of space though and I really wish they didn’t have stuff like this already installed on the computers with all these stupid trial games and things we don’t need that are just taking up space and cluttering the computer. I don’t like the Vista menu system really either. I liked xp better.
Anyway, the media maker is nice. It was easy to use. I make a lot of videos so I’ll be using that alot unless I get something like Vegas Pro. *crosses fingers.
I don’t see a built in webcam but i saw on another site that someone mentioned one. Maybe that’s for a different computer. There is a built in microphone that according to my friend sounds clearer than my other computer and clearer than my phone. He said it sounded like i was sitting right next to him. Awesome! lol sorry. But I like this computer so far, wish there were more usb ports and such, but for the price and that I got it at Walmart I am fine with what I got. =)

I have bought this computer like a week ago and LOVE it! I paid 368.00 my friend bought another acer with less specs for 700 and is kicking herself in the butt for it… all because she wanted xp and not vista… mind you i HATE vista and have converted my 5515 to xp… it took forever to find the right drivers and get it set up… but that could have been due to the fact im not all that smart with finding those things or converting but it can be done!…. now my family is all out trying to buy this laptop. my father has a dell he paid a grand for 2 yrs ago and he hates it compared to mine. my mom just bought this one yesterday and loves it. you cant beat the price and when i tell people how much i paid for it they about shit themself! well take advantage of it.. its only sold in stores and i saw it on a rollback for 348 yesterday.

Best Buy has the Acer AS5515- “5831″ (Walmart’s is the AS5515-”5879″) for $349.00 on there website. It has a webcam but only 2GB of ram. There may be other differances.

I bought this laptop because it was cheap and I want to see how good the Acer brand is. I usually stick with HP, Toshiba, and Dell laptops. I find that this laptop run considerably slower than all of my recent laptops. I failed to notice that the Acer laptop runs on single core AMD Athlon 64. Window experience index put it at 2.7 where as 2 of my duo core 2GB RAM Toshiba are 3.2. I notice that the laptop isnt sturdy either, I lifted up 1 corner of the laptop and it bent up, no other laptops I owned have this problem. So I dont recommend people to pick it up with one hand or on the corner or handle it roughly. The second issues is that it run slow and lags a lot, this can be resolve usually by restarting / warm booting the laptop. Sometimes the Interner Explorer suddenly should down or ope tabs uncontrollably but it can just be I.E. problems. I removed all the unnecessary preinstalled sw in the laptop. Over all, it’s very good for a beginner or second laptop for minor usage like mails, school, browsing, online shopping, etc.. Its price is hard to beat.

My screen willl not come on and there is no way to shut the computer down with no screen or prompts. I tried using both the wireless mouse and the touch pad to get the screen to come on, NO JOY. Any suggestions????

To the people that say that it doesn’t have a built-in cam, I just bought this laptop yesterday, and mine has a built-in cam, BUT, it says in the quick guide that only CERTAIN MODELS have the built-in cam. If your model has the built-in cam, it is centered above the monitor

I bought this lap top with the intention of just using it to check email and surf the web when I was away from my desktop. But I have been blown away with this little machine, It runs Office 2007 just fine, and I have been using it to watch online video and t.v. shows. I did have a few problems at first, but after removing McAfee they disappeared. Also to many games that just take up space.
