Bhuvan – A Google Earth Alternative from ISRO
ISRO – the Indian Space Research Organization, is now working on a project Bhuvan. Bhuvan is a satellite mapping tool like Google Earth and Wikimapia, which is planned to deliver higher quality data.
According to the president of Indian Space Agency, Mr. G. M. Nayar “Bhuvan will use the data recorded by the Indian satellites only. The prototype of Bhuvan will be ready by the end of November and ISRO is hoping to officially launch the service by March next”.
A report published on the website of Times Of India – the national newspaper, says that Bhuvan is going to provide higher resolution than Google Earth and Wikimapia. This will be able to give you an image from only 10 meters away! But, unlike the others, Bhuvan will focus only on Indian sub-continent.
This is very shaking news for the companies offering local mapping services and other related options. It hasn’t been cleared that the data will be provided to general users or it would be used only for official and other government agencies.
The ISRO has already attracted the world by its ambitious lunar project- Chandrayaan.
